About Artvin

The course is to be held in Artvin, a picturesque city in northeastern Türkiye where the Çoruh River cuts through deep valleys and high ridges. Artvin is renowned for its breathtaking landscapes, rich biodiversity, and warm local culture.

Getting to Artvin

Artvin is connected via three primary gateways:

  • Rize-Artvin International Airport (RZV) → ~1.5 hours by road to Artvin.
  • Trabzon International Airport (TZX) → ~3 hours by road to Artvin.
  • Batumi International Airport (BUS) (Georgia) → ~2 hours by road to Artvin.

Participants typically fly into Trabzon or Batumi and continue by shuttle or intercity bus. Designated meeting points in Trabzon and Batumi will help coordinate arrivals.

Local Climate

Artvin experiences a humid mountain climate. Summer conditions are generally mild compared to lowland Black Sea cities, with average daytime temperatures around 25–28 °C—ideal for outdoor fieldwork.

Field Sites

Fieldwork for tree‑ring sampling will be conducted in nearby spruce, fir, and mixed forests, as well as high‑altitude ecosystems around:

  • Şavşat Highlands
  • Hatila Valley National Park
  • Karagöl‑Sahara National Park

Most locations are within 30–90 minutes of Artvin city center, traffic and road conditions permitting.

Lectures & Laboratories

All lectures and laboratory sessions will be conducted at the Faculty of Forestry on the Seyitler Campus. The campus features sample preparation rooms, microscopes for cross‑dating, computer labs for chronology building, and seminar halls for invited talks and group discussions.

Arrival & Meet‑up

For coordinated arrivals, please plan flights to Rize Artvin (RZV) . Shuttle times and meeting‑point details will be shared in advance. If you plan to arrive by intercity bus, Artvin’s main bus terminal is a convenient rendezvous point.
